What it does
The image on a shared link does most of the work of getting a click. If it's the wrong shape, platforms crop it, and a headline or logo near the edge can get cut in half. If it's too small or too heavy, some apps skip it and show a plain text card.
This page lists the sizes that matter and lets you test your own image. Pick a file and it shows the dimensions, ratio and file size, flags anything that's too small or too large, and shows what's left after cropping to each card shape. The image never leaves your browser.
How to use it
- 1Check the table for the size you need. 1200×630 is the safe default for og:image.
- 2Under Try your image (stays in your browser), choose an image file.
- 3Read the size line and the two checks: width and file size.
- 4Look at the three crops, one per card shape, to make sure nothing important is cut off.
The sizes to use
Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and Discord all show og:image in a wide card. 1200×630 at a ratio of 1.91:1 looks right on all of them. LinkedIn's own advice is 1200×627, which is close enough that 1200×630 works there too.
X's large card, summary_large_image, is 2:1, so 1200×600. A 1200×630 image still works there; X trims a sliver from the top and bottom. The small summary card is square, at least 144×144.
Design it to survive cropping
One image will be shown in several shapes, so plan for that from the start.
- Keep text and logos inside the middle 80% of the image.
- Use large type. Cards are often shown at a few hundred pixels wide on a phone.
- Save as JPEG or PNG. WebP and SVG aren't shown everywhere.
- Keep the file under 1 MB. X won't use images over 5 MB.
- Use an absolute https URL in og:image, and change the file name when you change the image, so cached cards update.
Questions
What size should an Open Graph image be?
1200×630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio. It's the safe default for Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and most messengers, and works acceptably on X.
What size is the X (Twitter) card image?
The large summary_large_image card is 2:1, so 1200×600 works well, with a minimum of 300×157. The small summary card is square, at least 144×144.
What's the maximum file size?
X sets a 5 MB limit. Aim for under 1 MB anyway, since some apps skip large images and small files load faster.
Is my image uploaded?
No. It's read in your browser to measure it and draw the crops. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I use one image for every platform?
Yes. A 1200×630 image with the important parts kept away from the edges looks fine almost everywhere.
